Dear Residents of the District of Columbia,
I would like to take a moment to introduce myself and share my priorities and vision for transportation in our city. My name is Dan Tangherlini and as the director of the District Department of Transportation, I have assumed responsibility for managing the operations and maintenance of the District's transportation infrastructure.
The mission of DDOT is straightforward:
"To ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in and around the District."
The District is in a period of rebuilding, both in a financial and physical sense. To capitalize upon this rebirth, Mayor Anthony A. Williams has established goals that will have a visible impact upon our city. I believe that it is imperative that we make investments that will result in a city that we can be proud of. In alignment with the Mayor's vision, DDOT is working towards improving the quality of our streets, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure.
As the Director of Transportation, I have established several priorities for the Department:
- focus on the goals and priorities of the neighborhoods, residents, and businesses of the District to improve service delivery and responsiveness;
- serve as aggressive stewards of the transportation infrastructure, ensuring and protecting the approximately $7 billion in taxpayers' investment;
- promote safety and the attractiveness of the existing transportation system through improved maintenance, landscape, and traffic signaling; and
- support the provision of a variety of modal alternatives and develop cohesiveness among them within the District and other surrounding areas.
These priorities will require the Department of Transportation to become more flexible, attentive to residents' needs, and be a stronger voice of stewardship for all of our assets. We will also work to develop, in the District of Columbia, a world-class intermodal transportation system and become a model for other jurisdictions nationwide. The residents of the District of Columbia deserve no less than that. I look forward to working with all of you to realize this vision.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns: ddot@dc.gov
Sincerely,
Dan Tangherlini
Director
