The District of Columbia Division of Transportation (DDOT) invites applications for Transportation Enhancement projects on an annual basis. The next call for project requests will occur in August 2002. These projects are undertaken by DDOT with funding authorized by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. These funds support non-traditional projects meant to "strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of the Nation's Intermodal transportation system." Approximately $3 million in funding is available annually to the District for a combination of neighborhood and city projects. The application deadline is advertised on this website and through Councilmembers and Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.
DDOT has used Transportation Enhancement funding for a variety of projects including rehabilitation of the Taft Bridge Lions, preservation of the C & O Canal boathouse, and restoration of historic street and bridge lighting. Selected projects are implemented by DDOT. No funds are granted directly to neighborhood groups.
