Maglev Train Service

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has been working with the Maryland Mass Transit Administration to explore the possibility of initiating magnetic levitation (Maglev) train service between Baltimore and Washington, DC with an intermediate stop at the Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport. A Maglev train would use magnetic forces to lift it above its guideway .Electromagnetic forces would then propel the train.

A Maglev train would provide high-speed travel (at speeds up to 250 miles per hour) between Washington, DC and Baltimore. Passengers would access the Maglev trains at Union Station in Washington, DC. Travel time to BWI airport would be approximately 11 minutes. Travel time to Baltimore (including the stopover at BWI) would be about 19 minutes. The cost of a one-way trip between Washington and Baltimore would range between $14 and $28 (with the cost to BWI somewhat less). Current Amtrak Fares to Baltimore range between $14 and $42.

The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) associated with this project has recently been completed. It can be viewed online at the project's website www.bwmaglev.com

Paper copies of the Maglev DEIS can be viewed at:
