Resurfacing of Pennsylvania Avenue

Weather permitting, the resurfacing of Pennsylvania Avenue from 3rd to 15th Streets, NW, will begin this week as part of the District's preparation for the 2001 inaugural. The work includes adding a new riding surface, repairing curbs, gutters and sidewalks, rebuilding the underlying structure as necessary and replacing all crosswalks.

A key component of the project is traffic management to minimize disruption. Generally, three of the four traffic lanes will be maintained in each direction during rush-hour and two lanes in each direction during non rush-hour. Work will be concentrated during non-peak travel times, at night and on weekends. Parking will be restricted as needed.

The $2.4 million contract (90 percent federal funds, 10 percent District) was awarded to Lane Construction Company and is to be completed by early December.

The work is being coordinated with several federal agencies, including the National Capital Planning Commission, the Commission of Fine Arts, the National Park Service, and the White House.
