DDOT Starts Two Major Bridge Projects

On Monday, June 4, the District Department of Transportation will begin two long-term bridge rehabilitation projects that will significantly affect traffic. The bridges are the 23rd Street Bridge, NW, over Virginia Avenue and E Street near the State Department and George Washington University, and the Rhode Island Ave Bridge, NW/NE, over South Capitol Street.

RHODE ISLAND BRIDGE, NW/NE, OVER SOUTH CAPITOL ST.

For the Rhode Island Avenue Bridges over South Capitol Street and T Street, NW/NE, Rhode Island Avenue and South Capitol Street traffic will be affected. On Rhode Island, rush-hour travel lanes will be maintained as follows: from 6:30 to 9:30 am, two lanes westbound, one lane eastbound; 3:30 to 6:30 pm, two lanes eastbound, one lane westbound. During the non rush-hour, one lane will be maintained in each direction.

On the North Capitol Street service roads (above the main roadway), one travel lane in each direction will be maintained. Specifically, the current travel lanes (the ones closest to the median) will become work zones and the current parking lanes will become travel lanes.

Appropriate traffic signs will be used and the contractor will give 72 hours notice before making a change in traffic flows.

The project includes reconstruction of the Rhode Island Bridge and work on the North Capitol Street service roadways between T Street and Rhode Island Avenue, including traffic signal and street lighting modifications.

This work is being performed under a $3.2 million contract with the Martins Construction Corporation and is to be finished by the fall of 2002.

23RD STREET BRIDGE, NW, OVER VIRGINIA AVE & E ST

On July 5, reconstruction of the 23rd Street Bridge, NW will begin. Traffic on three roads will be affected as follows: 1) Virginia Avenue, one lane eastbound and one lane westbound maintained; 2) 23rd Street, four lanes, two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound maintained; and, 3) E Street Expressway, under the bridge, temporary lane closures during non rush hour.

Traffic signs and temporary pavement markings will guide traffic.

The work includes the complete rehabilitation of the 23rd Street Bridges over the E Street Expressway and Virginia Ave., NW, and roadway reconstruction on 23rd Street and Virginia Avenue, NW.

The $5.7 million contract is with Flippo Construction Company, Inc, and is to be finished by the middle of 2002.
