Outbound S. Capitol Street to Close this Weekend
Depending on the weather, the District Department of Transportation will close outbound South Capitol Street this weekend for about 12 hours for resurfacing.
Based on the most current available forecast, DDOT plans to start work Saturday morning, May 19, before 11 am and end before 11 pm. If it rains Saturday, the work will be performed on Sunday.
The road will be closed at E Street to the Anacostia side of the South Capitol Street/Frederick Douglass Bridge. The 11th Street Bridge will be the main detour and signage will guide motorists (see below); however, delays are anticipated.
DDOT is publicizing the detours and delays with variable message signs, leaflets and through the traffic-oriented media.
This is the second and final phase for the South Capitol Street resurfacing project; last Saturday, the northbound lanes were resurfaced. As was done with the New York Avenue resurfacing in northeast and Canal Road in northwest, DDOT is compressing the work as much as possible to avoid weeks of disruption.
"It's like pulling off the bandage - it hurts only for a moment," said Dan Tangherlini, acting director of transportation. "Instead of weeks of delay, we are concentrating the work to minimize total congestion."
