The Georgetown Project Takes a Holiday Break `

(Washington, DC) The Georgetown Project has stopped work temporarily and will resume on January 6, 2002. The moratorium, which began on November 21, is a key part of the project’s effort to minimize disruption for businesses, residents, and visitors during the busy holiday season.

During this period, the District Department of Transportation will lift the special 10:30 pm to 7 am parking restrictions that have been in place on M Street since mid-October to accommodate the construction project.

Steel plates that cover excavations will be removed, and the street and sidewalk surfaces will be restored temporarily for complete vehicular and pedestrian access. Regular posted Georgetown parking restrictions will remain in effect.

“Throughout the project, Georgetown has been and remains open for business,” said Skip Newcomb, co-chair of the project’s Executive Management Committee. “The majority of work had been performed overnight to minimize traffic disruptions and loss of business for local merchants.”

“The holiday season is always a special time of year to visit Georgetown,” said Karyn Good, executive director of the Georgetown Business and Professional Association. “Our merchants are eager to welcome District residents and visitors to all of the sights, sounds and flavors that make Georgetown a unique destination in the nation’s capital. Lifting the parking restrictions and removing the traffic barriers will certainly make it easier for visitors to come sample all that we have to offer.”

Special parking restrictions will be reinstated on January 6, when the project work is scheduled to resume at 10:30 pm.

The Georgetown Project is a coordinated utility construction effort in the M Street and Wisconsin Avenue corridors, involving Pepco, Verizon, Washington Gas, the DC Water and Sewer Authority and the DC Department of Transportation’s streetscape project. It officially began on October 17. Representatives of Georgetown’s business and residential communities serve as advisors to the project.

Information is available at www.thegeorgetownproject.org, or at The Georgetown Project Community Liaison Office at 1054 31 Street, NW in Canal Square. The phone number is (202) 298-2820. The office is open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm.
