Transportation Director Discusses Paving, Potholes, Snow Advances, and Bridge Decay in Council Testimony

Director Transportation Dan Tangherlini told the DC Council Committee on Public Works, chaired by Councilmember Carol Schwartz, that the Department of Transportation (DDOT) continued to make major improvements in the city's transportation system over the last fiscal year, including repaving over 100 miles of city streets, filling potholes on schedule, working with the Public Works Department on snow removal, lowering traffic accidents and restoring the city's tree canopy.

Tangherlini, who testified on March 4 at DDOT's annual oversight hearing, also brought to the Committee's attention the looming backlog of reconstruction work needed on many of the District's major bridges. "DDOT estimates that it will cost over $300 million in the next six years to repair the 9th Street Bridge, NE, the South Capitol Street Bridge, the northbound 14th Street Bridge and others," said Tangherlini. "If this work is not done soon, these costs will rise exponentially as decay accelerates."

Tangherlini added that there is a true federal interest in keeping these bridges in good repair. "They are key aspect of homeland security for the Nation's Capital and every day they serve a truly regional purpose. I look forward to working with Councilmember Schwartz and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and other local and federal officials to secure the needed federal funds." DDOT will shortly release a report on the District's bridge crisis.
