Street Construction Terms and Definitions

The following is a list of terms and definitions of the functions provided by DDOT's Street Construction Branch.

Reconstruction

  • Total removal and replacement of existing roadway with composite.
  • Install PCC or granite curbs and PCC or brick gutters.
  • Replace sidewalk (as needed).
  • Upgrade streetlight and drainage facilities.
  • Remove and plant trees.

Upgrading

  • Total removal and replacement of existing roadway with asphalt pavement, PCC curbs and gutters.
  • Replace sidewalks (as needed).
  • Upgrade streetlight and drainage facilities.
  • Remove and plant trees.

Resurfacing

  • Mill and replace asphalt.
  • Repair base, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
  • Upgrade streetlights and traffic signals.
  • Remove and plant trees.

New/Repairs to Sidwalk

  • New sidwalk construction is where no permanent structure exists.
  • Repairs to existing sidewalks.

New Alleys/Reconstruct Historic Alleys

  • New alleys are those constructed where no permanent structure exists.
  • Historic alleys are in historic districts and willb e constructed with historic materials.

Repairs to Curb and Gutter

  • Repairs to existing curb and gutter structures (all types).

Pavement Restoration/Spot Resurfacing

  • Mill and replace asphalt.
  • Repair base.
  • Minimal repairs to sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
  • Pavement restoration done by full blocks.
  • Spot resurfacing is localized repairs, due to rough or potholed pavements.

Wheelchair Ramps

  • New wheelchair ramp construction is where no permanent structure exists.
  • Repairs to existing wheelchair ramps (damaged).
