Street Construction Terms and Definitions
The following is a list of terms and definitions of the functions provided by DDOT's Street Construction Branch.
Reconstruction
- Total removal and replacement of existing roadway with composite.
- Install PCC or granite curbs and PCC or brick gutters.
- Replace sidewalk (as needed).
- Upgrade streetlight and drainage facilities.
- Remove and plant trees.
Upgrading
- Total removal and replacement of existing roadway with asphalt pavement, PCC curbs and gutters.
- Replace sidewalks (as needed).
- Upgrade streetlight and drainage facilities.
- Remove and plant trees.
Resurfacing
- Mill and replace asphalt.
- Repair base, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
- Upgrade streetlights and traffic signals.
- Remove and plant trees.
New/Repairs to Sidwalk
- New sidwalk construction is where no permanent structure exists.
- Repairs to existing sidewalks.
New Alleys/Reconstruct Historic Alleys
- New alleys are those constructed where no permanent structure exists.
- Historic alleys are in historic districts and willb e constructed with historic materials.
Repairs to Curb and Gutter
- Repairs to existing curb and gutter structures (all types).
Pavement Restoration/Spot Resurfacing
- Mill and replace asphalt.
- Repair base.
- Minimal repairs to sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
- Pavement restoration done by full blocks.
- Spot resurfacing is localized repairs, due to rough or potholed pavements.
Wheelchair Ramps
- New wheelchair ramp construction is where no permanent structure exists.
- Repairs to existing wheelchair ramps (damaged).
