District Department of Transportation

Traffic Calming

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is committed to improving our neighborhoods — and addressing traffic-related safety issues throughout the city — through carefully considered traffic calming measures. The following documents (for which we owe a great deal of thanks to the staff of the Howard University Transportation Research Center) should be useful for citizens who are interested in traffic calming. The first one outlines the policies and guidelines that govern DDOT’s and citizens’ collaborative approach to traffic calming, including the process through which citizens can request traffic calming measures. The second provides some useful background information for citizens interested in (1) the characteristics, pros, and cons of various traffic calming measures (see Chapter 2); and (2) how other jurisdictions approach traffic calming (see Chapter 3).

Please call 671-2730 with any questions or for more information on the process for making traffic calming requests.
