Washington DC has been named a Tree City USA
Washington, DC has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.It is the thirteenth year Washington has received this national recognition.
The Tree City USA program is a national program that recognizes communities throughout the United States that have shown a commitment to improving their tree resource.In order to become a Tree City USA, each community must meet four standards:
- Must have a tree board or department
- A tree care ordinance
- A tree budget of $2 per capital
- Have an Arbor Day observance
The Tree City USA award is set up to award communities for the work performed in the previous year. Washington received the award for accomplishments in 2002.Some of those accomplishments include:
- Planting over 4000 street trees
- Pruning 17, 000 street trees
- Removing 2,000 dead/diseased trees
- Passing the Urban Forest Preservation Act of 2002
- Hiring additional Urban Forestry Administration staff
The mission of DDOT's Urban Forestry Administration is to manage and increase the District's street trees. Maintain healthy trees that provide improved air quality, temperature moderation, aesthetics, and other benefits for our community. By maintaining the Tree City USA status, UFA is committed to improving DC's green infrastructure.
